About what is "art"

Previous Entry what is "art" Oct. 1st, 2005 @ 11:13 am Next Entry
i hate how people glaze over and automatically say, "art is anything, its up to the individual" its an easy answer. thats not what art is. art has a meaning. its not "anything" it has a purpose, it has a standard, it has devices.

and when they give that answer, they really dont know or understand art.

Does anyone agree/disagree? i've discussed it many times in my head, but i think it'd be nice to have other opionions.

To my mind, art should has a message. I doesn't mean a well-defined and acceptable for everyone. But The should be a reason for the artist to create something. There is art that can be considered "serious", maybe political orientated. But there is also art that is made for the purpose of beauty. Both move us. In short, art is something that brings some changes in thinking, feeling, etc.

The idea of Islamic art is that it must be enjoyable by everyone and conform to laws regarding depictions of living things. Art is for the benefit & enjoyment of all, not for the personal glory of the artist. So that would rule out most modern art. The traditional artforms like mosaic tilework, stylized depictions of plant life, carpets, architecture and calligraphy appeal to the majority, and have a certain anonymity to them that, say, a signed Picasso doesn't. Post-Warhol modern artists go by the motto "it is art because I say it is art." Modern art is the ultimate expression of egotism, if you ask me.
